COOL CYCLE_26 - BIO BRASILIA
What does it mean to be a designer of ability and focus with a dedication to technological advances, but one who cares less for his/her enlightened production than for the people and society around her/him? Oscar Niemeyer answered this question throughout his life: he demonstrated his love and sadness for his fellow Brazilian people over his immense formal and aesthetic accomplishments. While he was steeped in the utopian (and ultimately successful) design of the capital City of Brasilia, working on a pittance government salary, he handed over his design studio in Rio to the Communist Party of Brazil as it waged (ultimately a failed) social war against the tyrannies of the CIA, militarism, and fascism. While we visited to study the creative glories of Brasilia, to integrate specific design elements into our Cool Cycle_26–from its curvaceous, futuristic, and humanistic plan and buildings– we thought deeply about elemental societal difficulties that overshadow any design endeavor. We also think about modernism as Niemeyer: infusing creative materials and construction technologies to exude minimalist beauty, in the service of final clients’ enjoyment and use.”
